Ivo Rijkers

How do you suggest a contour of a knee, an arm or a bosom underneath draped fabric? What fabrics do – more than anything – is revealing by concealing; a theme where the Greek, like the artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini, where grandmasters in. just like his predecessors, Ivo Rijkers is searching for new forms in figurative art. He forms polyesters and plastics with his idiosyncratic handwriting into sculptures. Cast pieces, solidified fragments from parts of the human body build in layers and floes. Rijkers is closely involved with the process of the conversion to bronze. The original roughness of the casting skin is maintained as much as possible and became an essential part of his oeuvre.

Ivo Rijkers (Etten-Leur, 1976) lives and works in Haarlem, The Netherlands. He started his studies in 1996 at the Municipal Institute of Ornamental Arts and Crafts (SISA) in Antwerp, Belgium and graduated in 1999 from the Academy for Fine Arts (ABK) in Maastricht, The Netherlands. Since then he works as a professional artist and received a scholarship from the Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture in 1999. Rijkers is also committed to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam where he works for the collection department.
