His subjects are simple, his technique however, is a complex one. Collage techniques result in multilayered structures in which he, like an archaeologist, bury and assimilate forms in his paint, as vestiges of present-day civilization.

The contrast between the monumental composition with mathematical shapes and the amorphous detailed effects in glazy bright colours, gives this work a unique character. In these modern icons Verwiel does not accept the restrictions of the flat plane. He loves showing the illusion of space with physical volumes in a peculiar perspective, compressed or stretched on the large canvas.
